Newborn kittens are delicate creatures that need special care. Bringing up new kittens can be a very challenging and time-consuming job.   • Keep a close watch over the kittens after birth, to ensure that the mother cat is healthy and kittens can take her feed. It is always better to leave the kittens with mother for first couple of weeks after birth so that she can take care of her kittens.
  • After care of kittens also includes ensuring all kittens a fair share of their mother's milk.
  • To help the kittens socialize, make them familiar with your smell and touch.
  • Three weeks after birth, prepare the kittens to move around and explore their surroundings.
  • After about four weeks, the kittens will have to start consume solid food. This could be initiated by using some strong smelling food item. Make sure you feed the kittens only special kitten food and after about a year, they can start eating basic cat food.
  • The cat can teach them how to use litter tray, but the tray needs to be cleaned regularly.
  • Kittens do not like too much of fondling, so it is better to avoid picking them up every now and then.
  • You can arrange a small "nest" for the new born kittens to make them feel comfortable. This can be a cardboard box lined with clean towels.
  • Newborn kittens need to be kept in isolation, away from other pets. Also make sure that you maintain hygienic condition by washing your hands both before and after caring for kittens.

Basic Requirements Of New Born Kittens

  • Warm Environment - Chilled kittens can die very easily and therefore this condition is considered a veterinary emergency. You may either hold kittens close to your skin, so that they get the required heat from your body or use a heating pad, wrapped with a thick towel. However, ensure that you leave enough unheated space in the box, so that kittens can move away from heating source in case they feel uncomfortable. After care of kittens also involve maintaining kitten's body temperature, so as to avoid metabolic shock.
  • Food And Nourishment - A tiny kitten needs as many as 12 meals a day. At 3 weeks, you can train kittens to eat in dishes. Initially, you can feed your kittens some dry food with milk formula mashed into a thick paste. After couple of months you can shift her to solid food.
