The American Bobtail

The American Bobtail is a newer breed of cat, having only been developed around the 1960s. These cats are notable for their stubby or bobbed tails which are the result of a naturally occurring genetic mutation, much like the Manx cat. These cats arent related to the Japanese Bobtail, nor are there any genetic links to the wild cats known as bobtails.

The American Bobtail is a very sturdy breed of cat. It may have either a short or long coat, which is usually somewhat shaggy. Coloring and markings are usually that of the tabby type, and these cats often have a wild look together with a sweet appearance the specific traits for which theyre bred.

In terms of personality, the American Bobtail is a very energetic cat, known for its dog-like personality. Just like a dog, these cats will greet you at the door and like to play fetch with you. In fact, theyre often compared to Golden Retrievers in terms of both personality and devotion to their human owners. If youre expecting a typical, aloof cat, then the American Bobtail is certainly going to surprise you. Theyre playful cats and often entertain the whole family with their antics. They can be quite persistent when they want to play, and will play for hours at a time. In addition, its easy to train these cats to take walks on leashes, as they seem to enjoy spending time outdoors. However, a few things to watch out for American Bobtails have a great tendency towards escaping and getting into closed areas, even as small as jewelry boxes.

These cats have medium to large bodies with a wedge shaped head atop a sturdy frame. Their eyes are almond-shaped and large, and they have athletic, well-muscled bodies, covered with short to medium length hair thats resistant to water. It typically takes two to three years for these cats to reach their full adult size. In addition, no two American Bobtails have identical tails, which, on average, are generally between one to four inches long. And though generally a quiet breed, they can be vocal particularly when theyre happy.

These cats get along well with families and other pets theyre excellent companions for children and dont mind being carried around. They can be equally happy in an active or quiet household, so long as they have someone to play with. Interestingly, truck drivers often have these pets as companions in their cabs, as these cats are amenable to traveling, as long as theyre introduced to it at an early age. In addition, these cats are often used by psychotherapists in therapeutic settings because theyre not only well-behaved, but because theyre sensitive to people who are experiencing distress.

In terms of health, there are two things you should be watch out for bad hips, and rumpies, or cats who have shortened spines and no tails whatsoever. Beyond these two conditions, the American Bobtail is a surprisingly energetic cat who will keep you entertained for hours on end.
