Does Your Cat Suffer From Allergies?

When your cat seems to be in discomfort, an allergic reaction probably isnt the first thing that comes to your mind. However, more than 15 percent of all cats suffer from some type of allergy, so it should be something for you to consider.

For example, cats can become allergic to certain ingredients in their food. Even if you havent changed your cat's food, the manufacturer may have slightly altered their formula, introducing a new allergen to your cat. The best way to discover this type allergy is to make careful note of when your cat has a reaction and see if it corresponds to eating a particular food. Your cat can also have an allergic reaction to a medication or vaccination she has received consult your vet if you suspect this is the case.

Biting insects and parasites especially fleas can also be a problem in terms of allergies. Protect your cat from fleas by using a topical product to prevent them, and by removing fleas from your cat's environment. However, your cat could be allergic to the products youre using to protect her from fleas, whether its a topical anti-flea medication or a flea collar. If you suspect fleas and your cats symptoms dont resolve themselves within a couple of days, talk to your vet about an alternate treatment.

In addition, things that tickle our noses like the smell of green grass or pollen can also cause allergy symptoms in your cat. During high pollen seasons, try to use the air conditioner to cool your home instead of opening the window. She may also be allergic to a product youre using in the environment, such as an air freshener, a cleanser or a perfume.

If your cat has an allergy, you may observe face rubbing, excessive grooming, sneezing, discharge from the eyes and nose, heavy breathing, scratching and twitching. You may also notice that your cat has circular raised areas on her skin, which may indicate a more localized reaction.

Any time you notice symptoms of an allergic reaction in your cat even if you arent completely sure that what you observed or are observing is an allergic reaction immediately write down everything you can remember about the last 30 minutes of your cat's life. What did your cat do, eat or play with? Write down what was happening in the cat's environment as well. Was someone spraying air freshener, wearing a new perfume or using a cleanser? Were the windows open? Had the cat been outside? Had someone just come in from the outside? The more information you can gather, the more likely it is that youll see a pattern emerge.

If your records turn up a potential irritant, remove it from your cat's environment and see if her symptoms improve. If they dont, if they recur, or if they seem to be serious, talk with your veterinarian. He or she may recommend further testing or the use of a medication, such as an antihistamine, which can reduce symptoms and make your cat more comfortable.

Fortunately, most cat allergies can be managed either by removing the source of the irritation, or by minimizing exposure when removal isnt possible. Medication for allergies isnt often needed, but can be a valuable tool for improving your cat's quality of life.
