How To Treat Cat Diarrhea

All cat owners face the experience of cat diarrhea at some or the other point in time. If it's a simple feline diarrhea or stomach upset, then there is no need to worry. It is often cured with a little observation and care. But it can become a matter of concern if it persists for a long time. Sometimes this kind of diarrhea can be a symptom of other underlying diseases. You should be well informed about when you should take the signs of cat diarrhea seriously and take your cat to a vet for treatment.

Proper care is necessary when your cat is suffering from diarrhea because your cat loses body fluids and vital nutrients through the watery feces. Provide adequate electrolytes to prevent your cat from dehydration.

Look out for these symptoms of feline diarrhea-

  • Frequent passing of loose, watery feces
  • Stains of blood in the feces
  • Feces stain near the bottom region
  • Bad odor
  • High fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dehydration
  • Stomach swelling or abdominal pain
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Lethargy or tiredness
  • Vomiting

The things you should do if your cat is suffering from diarrhea:-

Don't let your cat go outside if you see any of the symptoms of diarrhea. If your cat has a toilet outside your house, put a litter tray out for your cat to use and keep a close eye on it.

If you suspect diarrhea, don't give any solid food for at least the next 24 hours. That will be very helpful if your cat is suffering from a stomach upset.

During diarrhea, give electrolytes mixed with fresh water at regular intervals. It will prevent dehydration. Look out if any particular substance like rich cat food or scrap food is causing this problem of diarrhea.

You can gradually start a balanced diet with white meat or plain fish after 24 hours once you are assured that the signs of diarrhea are not deteriorating any further. Feed your cat small portions of food 4-6 times a day. But the total amount of food should be half of its usual amount till it gets completely well.

If you see no further signs of diarrhea and your cat is showing improvement, slowly increase the amount of its food.

If you see the symptoms of diarrhea persists or return again after some time or you see blood in the feces, then you should promptly take your cat to the vet.

There are many causes that can result in cat diarrhea. Some simple causes that can lead to diarrhea are:

  • Rich food
  • Consuming some indigestive
  • From cow milk, due to Lactose intolerance
  • Drinking unclean water
  • Sudden change of environment, a recent shock like change of home or arrival of a new family member or a pet

If the cause is trivial, then a simple remedy will help the cat to get cured very soon. However, there are some other serious things can cause feline diarrhea:

  • Viruses or intestinal parasites
  • Inflammatory diseases of bowels
  • Infections caused by fungus or bacteria
  • Hyperthyroidism or hormonal disorder
  • Disease of the pancreas
  • Intestinal cancer
  • Feline leukemia virus
  • Feline immunodeficiency virus

If your cat is not cured and the symptoms of cat diarrhea persist, then visit the vet at the earliest.
