Once you have got your little kitty home, your aim should be to learn all about common cat health problems and how to deal with them. A cat could face hereditary health problems. Though we cannot do much about such health problems, we can easily prevent other cat health problems that it might face from time to time.

Some Frequent Cat Health Problems

Let us now learn about some common cat health problems and some simple ways to deal with them:

  • Worms are something that your cat could be infested with. These could be tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms or parasites like fleas. If you feel that your cat is not putting on weight despite eating enough food or if you find white specks in its stool then get your cat tested for worms. Worms can easily be got rid off with proper treatment.
  • Another one of cat health issues is 'Hairball'. By nature, cats swallow all their loose hair. Often, this loose hair forms into a ball and gets trapped in the digestive tract. Though this hair is ideally supposed to pass out with the stool, if it doesn't, it comes out with vomit. Well! Now that you HAVE got a cat home it would be better to understand all about the common health problems cats face. If your cat is still not able to get rid of this hairball then it is bound to get stuck in its intestine creating a blockage. So if you find that your cat is not eating enough or is constipated, then take it to a vet so that he or she can give the right treatment.
  • Cat health problems are aplenty and another one of the most common health problems cats face is a urinary tract infection. This infection occurs more commonly in male cats that haven't been sterilized. If you find that you cat has suddenly stopped going to the litter box or its urine odor has become strong, then probably your cat is suffering from UTI. Take your cat to the vet and let him take care of the problem with proper medication.
  • Feline Leukemia is another risk to your cat's health. Till a few years back, this disease was the main cause of cat deaths, but not any more. Today there are vaccinations that can take care of this fatal disease. However, even after being given a shot, most cats are known to live a lot lesser that their usual life span. Incase your cat too has feline leukemia; ensure that it does not mix with other cats as the virus is highly contagious.

Most cat health problems can be easily prevented with proper attention, timely vaccinations and healthy food. But even after all your love and care if your cat still develops a health problem, do take it to a vet to get the right advice and medical help.
