Build Your Own Outdoor Cat Run

There are many things that you need to take into consideration when planning your cat run. The first thing you need to think about is how much time and money you can put into the project. Next, you need to decide how much space you have for the cat run, and where youll build it. Also, consider when planning how much skill you have if youre a beginning craftsman, you probably shouldnt try to build a mini cat condo.

If youre a beginner or you dont have a lot of cash to start with, dont be too concerned. You can always start small and add on later. Your outdoor cat run is truly your own you can make changes and renovations to it, just as you would to your own home.

Building the Cat Run

When you start building your cat run, remember that the enclosure needs to be secure enough that your favorite furry pet wont be able to go running off and getting herself into trouble in the neighborhood. At the same time, you want her to be able to take in the fresh air and sunlight, so you dont want the structure to be fully enclosed.

Be sure to take into consideration how your kitten will get from the house to the structure. Are you going to carry her out each day or are you going to give her some sort of access via a window or door? You might want to build some sort of bridge access or tunnel, although you can always add this to the cat run later.

In addition, be sure that your main structure allows enough room for you to maneuver around inside if possible. You never know when youll need to get in there and clean things up, or help your cat out of some kind of mischief. You dont want your cat to be able to get away from you completely.

The next thing you want to take into consideration as youre putting in the shelves and ramps is to make sure that you put in a sheltered area that will protect your cat from any sudden weather changes. This would also be a good place for you to put her food trays and litter boxes if you plan to keep her in the run for long periods of time. And dont forget to provide a water source. This can be a water dish that you refill daily, a self-dispensing dish that you refill weekly, or a fountain that provides fresh running water at any time day or night

When it comes to actually building the outdoor cat run, be sure to use sturdy, weatherproof materials that wont rust, mildew, or rot when wet. You should also be sure that any mesh used is large enough for air to circulate, but small enough that nothing larger than a mouse can enter.

Building your own outdoor cat run is really all about your own preferences and what you think your cat would enjoy. Depending on your budget, you can make them very small and simple, or you can go all out and build your own kitty condo. Whatever your budget and scale, you can be sure that your cat will greatly appreciate being able to go outside without fear or trouble.
