How to Help a Cat Lose Weight

Sometime or another, nearly all of us have found ourselves standing over the scale and/or miserably catching a glimpse of an unwanted reflection in a mirror too boldly telling the truth about our weight. It seems so much easier to gain weight than it is to lose weight; a rule of thumb that also applies to other creatures as well, take the house cat and its inherent likelihood of obesity.

Common determination of weight gain is universal. Overeating, unbalanced diet, and too little exercise are an inevitable culprit to pack on the pounds, or in cat terms: ounces. Overweight cats are more prone to disease, likely discomfort, and are even locomotively affected in an adverse way. Lethargy is a symptom that follows weight gain, as is change of activity and behavior. These signs are nothing to be ignored. While many humans evasively overlook their own problems of weight gain, it is imperative to immediately and effectively attack the problem in pets. Cats are unable to shop for themselves, ration their portions of food, or join a gym, which leaves them vulnerable and utterly dependent on their owners to step up to the plate. Following are a few suggestions to help arrest and further reverse a problem of weight gain and obesity.

Stack up on knowledge. The innate biochemistry of a cat is unlike that of a human or dog. Contrary to a higher need of calories and energy fueling carbohydrates, a cat can, and ideally should, live on little or no carbohydrates. Instead, felines have a great need for protein. In the wild, a mouse is comprised predominantly of protein, then fat and fluids (moisture). This ingredient makeup is prime for a healthy cat diet. Too often, pet owners lean on the convenience of preservative-filled, grain based dry cat food that is easily purchased, stored, and offered throughout the day. Moreover, most cat foods are comprised of grains which are carbohydrate based versus meat which is protein based. Even premium quality canned cat food will provide a positive alternative. Changing the cats feeding to 2-4 small portioned meals throughout the day, and then removing the food after mealtime will cut out unnecessary calories for kitty. This is a good start to moderating and reducing your cats diet. It is also very important to be aware of proper serving portions relative to a cats size. Most labels on commercial cat food suggest much more than what is actually appropriate for your cat to consume. This will inevitably cause weight gain. Instead of measuring cupfuls of food, offer .06 to 1 ounce of food per meal.

Changing a cats diet must undoubtedly be done gradually. An abrupt change can cause serious stomach upset and also lead to a cats refusal to eat. This can cause a severe disease called Hepatic Lipidosis. Over the span of a few weeks, gradually mix in the new food with the old, until the old food becomes completely phased out. Be sure to introduce higher levels of protein while reducing the amount of carbohydrates your cat takes in. Flavor enhanced treats also contribute to the weight problem, so begin reducing those flavorful extras. In turn, if you wish to reward your cat or spoil it a bit, offer small pieces of turkey, chicken or fish. Even cottage cheese is better than your store bought kitty treats.

Reduced portions of healthier and more cat-appropriate food will definitely stop your cats weight gaining pattern, but it may not reduce the weight that has already been packed on. Exercise is the other half of this equation. Considering cats were once wild creatures and used to have to chase their food, they were much more active than their now sedentary lifestyles. There is no doubt that encouraging a cat to exercise is far more difficult than simply walking or running with a dog. Using a little creativity, try toys to entice your cat to pounce and chase pretend prey. Catnip, interactive toys, or even a friendly, playful kitty pal will assist in getting your cat to become more active.

Weight loss has never been said to be easy. To reach a healthy loss, it must be done gradually, and diligently. Appropriate changes to diet, portion, and also exercise are imperative changes that must be regimented. Just as a healthy weight is dire in maintaining positive mood, activity and overall well being, so is doing what it takes to achieve that optimum weight. It may be an unwanted change, but the results will no doubt leave you with a better feeling, happier cat!
