Preparing For Cat Pregnancy Birth

Cat pregnancy birth is a joyous event in your house! Make sure that your cat gets all the care she needs at this time. There are some things that you cannot do anything about such as instances of the cat neglecting her kittens because of their less survival chances. No matter how much care you take, they wont survive. This is a cats natural instinct.

Then there are certain things you CAN do something about. One of them is preventing the newborns from drowning in their own fluid. When the litter box contains clumping litter, the sac gets soiled with litter and the mother cat refuses to clean off her newborn. As a result, the newborn drowns. You can definitely try and prevent this unfortunate event of cat pregnancy birth.

Birth

The first kitten usually comes out within an hour of labor. The second one may either get delivered immediately after, or within a couple of hours after labor. It may also happen that the labor stops for 24-48 hours and then starts again for the birth of other kittens.

Birthing box

Usually, cats choose their own place to give birth. However, you can coax her a little by providing her with an inviting maternity box or nesting box. The box should be of thick cardboard or even wood. It should be spacious enough for your cat to stretch comfortably. See that its not too big though, as your cat will need to touch the box sides with her legs while delivering.

Place this box at a serene and warm corner of the house. Your cat, while on the lookout for a suitable place for cat pregnancy birth, will come across this box. If she finds it ideal, shed make it her nesting place.

What If Your Cat Rejects The Box?

This means the box was not inviting enough for her to nest in. You cant just put an empty cardboard box and expect your cat to like it. Furnishing the box is important. Line the box with soft towels or blanket or newspapers on all sides. Provide a pillow (with a water proof cover, if possible) for her to lie down. Remember, you should be able to dispose off the things in the box easily, as your cat might want to use this box after birth too, for nursing her kittens. Also, you should take care to maintain hygiene in the box by changing the soiled newspapers or towels. Your cat would surely like clean places.

To make the box warmer and more comfortable for cat pregnancy birth, you can install infrared lamps at a safe distance from the box. Infrared light eases labor pain and keeps the newborn warm. However, this is optional. But, youd want to give the best care to your beloved pet, right?

Once your cat has liked the box, shed be happy to settle in it. Cat pregnancy birth is the best time to pamper her and show your maximum love towards her. Remember when you bought her a cute little ball of fur? Today, shes become a mother, ready to give you cute little baby kitties!
