Characteristics Of Oriental Short Hair Cat

Oriental short hair cat is very similar to Siamese cat. This breed has developed as a result of cross breeding of Siamese cat with short hair type cats. This hybrid was developed around 1950. These cats are also known as Ornamental cats. The solid white color, oriental short hair type is known as Foreign Type.

Characteristics Of Oriental Short Hair Cat:

• Appearance:

Oriental short hair cats are medium in size and have muscular body. They have a wedge shaped head and large ears. Their eyes are almond shaped and usually green or blue in color. Their legs are slender and long. Their tail is long and tapered. Some varieties may have one eye blue and the other green. Their coat is very fine, short and glossy. They do not have an undercoat.

• Color and pattern:

It resembles closely to that of a Siamese except that it doesn't have pointed pattern. These cats are found in approximately 300 colors and patterns. Different colors and patterns of these cats are a result of cross breeding of Siamese with different types of cats. The different types of patterns found on their coats are smoke, tabby, parti-color and bi-color. Tabby includes classic, spotted, mackerel or ticked. These cats are also available in solid colors like white, red, blue, lavender, and cream. Oriental short hair cats are one of the most colorful cats.

• Weight:

The weight of an adult female cat is around 5-8 pounds and the weight of an adult male cat is around 10 pounds.

• Behavior and temperament:

Oriental short hair cats are attention seekers. They are affectionate and curious. They are playful and very vocal in their communication. They are very loyal too. These cats are good pets for people who can spend considerable time with them.

• Age and health:

This breed of cat is normally healthy. They may suffer from some of the diseases like dental problems and problems of the liver. The average life span of ornamental cats is around 15 years.

• Grooming:

  They require little grooming as their coat is very fine and short. There is little shedding. But you should atleast brush them atleast once a week.

Summary: In short, Oriental short hair cats are descendants of Siamese cat and they come in different colors and patterns. They are very gregarious, active, agile and inquisitive. They are not good pets for very small children or for lazy or busy people. This is because ornamental cats love to play and spend time with their owners.
