The Savannah A Cat Still Wild at Heart

Contrary to popular belief, the Savannah cat isnt actually a cat its a hybrid, the offspring of the wild Serval and a domestic cat. This means that the cat falls under several state and federal regulations and cant always be purchased and owned like a standard domestic cat. If youre interested in buying one of these animals, youll need to first check the laws of your particular state to determine the requirements for ownership.

The history of this breed of cat is fairly short, going back only as far as 1986. Breed standards were not developed until ten years later in 1996, and the breed was only minimally accepted at that time. That said, the breed went from an initial registry of 100 cats in 1996, to an estimated population of 22,000 in 2001, so its clear that the popularity of this new breed is taking off quickly.

The Savannah is one of the largest breeds of cats, and its height and slim body make it look even larger. Generally these cats weight between 15 and 20 pounds, although some have been reported to weigh as much as 30 pounds. As hybrids, these cats are hearty and strong, but also tend to be sterile. Females from the F2 generation the generation after a wild cross can be fertile however, so spaying may still be required. Genetically, these animals have small livers for animals of their size; otherwise, they arent susceptible to any particular medical conditions.

Primarily, these cats are noted for their wild cat appearance. The markings are usually those of a spotted tabby with prominent striped ears. They have a head thats usually taller than it is wide thats perched atop a long, slender neck features that add to the cat's wild appearance. Their eyes are boomerang shaped, under a slightly hooded brow, reminiscent of their Serval progenitors.

The Savannah can be regarded as the most dog-like feline of any domestic cat. They are loyal, will head-butt you like a dog, and can be trained to walk on a leash. Some Savannah cats are very friendly and social pets that get along with people, other cats and dogs, while others tend to have more aloof personalities.

In addition, there are two traits that are noted across the breed. These cats are incredibly intelligent animals that can and do get into anything and everything. Their curiosity knows no limits. In fact, if they had opposable thumbs, we humans just might be in trouble. They also love high places and are excellent jumpers. From a flat footed stance, the Savannah cat can jump up to eight feet in the air, a trait thats also associated with its wild Serval relatives.

Like many wild cats, the Savannah isnt afraid of water. In fact, they seek out water and consider it a plaything. Theyll spill water from their bowls and play with it until it evaporates or until you clean it up.

And surprisingly, the voices of these animals vary from a bird-like chirp similar to their Serval ancestors to a more traditional, cat-like meow. Some animals use both vocalizations equally. In addition, when they hiss, they sound more like a snake than a cat.

The Savannah cats suitability as pets depends a great deal on the individual animal and the living space you provide it. This isnt, after all, a domestic animal, but a wild hybrid, so youve got to be able to make some accommodations for its particular needs.
