Breed Profile The Sphynx

In the mid 1960s, the Sphynx, a breed of cats was discovered thats one of the few naturally hairless breeds in existence. Over the last three decades, breeders in America and Europe have engaged in feline breeding programs that have resulted in a genetically vibrant strain with a great deal of hybrid vigor.

Today, the Sphynx is a very strong breed with few to no genetic problems. But contrary to popular belief, they arent totally hairless they can in fact have a down-like covering to help protect their skin. This makes the cat feel wonderfully unique not unlike a peach warmed by the sun or a hot water bottle wrapped in the softest flannel.

However, the lack of hair total or otherwise doesnt mean a uniform variation in color. All shades and patterns are possible the pigment will just be on the skin. Of course, theres the eternal question of whether or not these cats are subject to getting cold. Take heart theyre no more susceptible to cold than a human is. If youre comfortable, they are too. And if they cant find a warm partner to curl up with, theyre smart enough to find a warm bed.

As far as body type goes, the hybrid crosses have really paid off. This is a solid cat thats strong for a medium-sized cat. Theres a bit of sexual dimorphism, with the males being a bit larger than the females. A healthy cat of this breed should have strong bones and strong muscle tone. Normally, theyll show a bit of belly, like theyve just had a full dinner.

The Sphynxs personality is marked by an extreme curiosity and they thrive when theyre the center of attention. Youll be very entertained by their antics and at times quite charmingly clumsy behavior. In addition, the Sphynx is a great show cat they have a me, me, me, demeanor and an openness that makes them a joy for judges to handle.

In a multi-pet household, this breed is a good choice, even though they prefer the attention of their owners. Theyll always be on you, near you or showing off to get your attention. Love Monsters is one common phrase used to describe the Sphynx.

Now, a bit on the lack of hair the normal cat body oils have nowhere to go naturally, so expect to periodically bathe the cat and clean their ears. Fortunately, this isnt that much a chore, as most reputable breeders will have been doing this since the cats were kittens.

If youre looking for a hypoallergenic cat, the Sphynx is a bit of a gamble. Some people with cat allergies do well with this kind of cat. Others especially with those whose allergies are severe may still have problems with the Sphynxs body oils and dander.

If all of this has enticed you into buying a Sphynx, know that breeders will have kittens available when theyre between twelve and sixteen weeks of age. After that, expect the kittens to have had their basic inoculations. Theyll also have already developed the physical and mental stability they need to transition to a new environment. Just remember that youll have to keep such a treasure inside, neutering or spaying your pet and providing her with something like a scratching post to take care of her natural scratching instincts.
