Are You Spoiling Your Cat?

Cat owners know how the typical cattitude plays out. They give their love. They give their affection, but sometimes they give you something more.

They can become somewhat overbearing when they decide one day that they prefer the countertop in the kitchen to the floor, or that the water in the decorative fountain is better than their water dish. When taking a stroll across your freshly mopped floor and proudly pouncing on your computer keyboard become a reoccurring event it may be time take a third-person view of what is happening.

The day that Fluffy decides that taking naps on the computer desk is ok wont really matter as long as you decide that it is not ok. The problem with most cat owners is a tendency to say you spoiled rotten kitty when their behavior becomes defiant, but then inconsistency of the command is what determines your cats lasting behaviors. Just as children can become spoiled the same holds true for your perfect feline.

When cats get bored they can decide on doing something defiant just to create a little excitement. Dont let them fool you. Cats are very smart and extremely crafty in the way of knowing. They understand that things beyond the norm are probably out of bounds, but they do not push those buttons until they are ready to test the results. Boredom is a guided tester.

When you have noticed your feline sitting, basking, in the sun that sits on your no cat zone computer desk, but you walk casually by whispering you silly cat you have officially given your friend permission to be bad. This goes for any restricted behavior that gets pushed under the rug over time because he/she is just so darn cute.

If you do not approve of a particular behavior then begin to actually disapprove of it. A sideways look from your pet cat wont kill you so step up and decide to regain ownership of your own furniture. If your cat decides to wake you up at 5am to be fed, if you wake up and follow through, then you are approving of this behavior. Do you really want to get up at 5am to feed the cat every morning? No. So leave the bedroom door shut for a few nights and get your rest. It can be as simple as arming yourself with a squirt bottle and a sense of authority.
